Surgery - A Patient Guide

I designed this project with the learner experience in mind. This module provides information to the general public on surgery preparation, procedures, and expectations. It is geared toward both patients and caregivers.

Audience:  General public, and their caregivers, scheduled for surgery.

Responsibilities: eLearning development, scripting, graphic design, mockups, audio narration, closed caption transcription, and printed support materials.

Tools Used: Articulate Rise, Storyline 360, Vyond, Premier Pro, Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Audacity

My Process

I applied a human-centered design approach to develop this learning experience. Through a thorough analysis of both learner needs and existing patient materials, I designed the module to clearly inform the general public about surgical preparation, the procedure itself, and the recovery process.

To better align with the patient experience, I restructured the content to mirror the actual surgical journey. Information was organized according to the patient’s preparation and recovery timeline, ensuring clarity and relevance at each stage. The Preparing for Surgery module was structured into three intuitive phases: Pre-Surgery, Day-of Surgery, and Post-Surgery, allowing learners and caregivers to easily access the information they need at the right time.

Action Map

I partnered with a subject matter expert (SME) to develop an action map and define the overall learning goal. Through guided collaboration, we identified the key actions patients and caregivers take as they prepare for surgery, ensuring the experience was practical, relevant, and aligned with real-world needs.

Detailed Outline - Actions

Next, the subject matter expert (SME) identified and prioritized the key actions patients and caregivers must complete to support a successful surgical experience. After client approval, I developed a detailed outline that aligned these actions with each phase of the surgical journey.

Text-Based Storyboard

I developed a text-based storyboard to map the learner journey, define content flow, and establish the overall design direction and tone of the module

Visual Mockups

I created visual mockups in Adobe XD prior to development in Articulate Storyline 360. In the initial design iteration, a nurse character was not included. During the second iteration, I refined the visual direction and introduced an AI-generated nurse character to enhance learner engagement. This addition helped make the content feel more approachable, supportive, and aligned with a caring, patient-centered experience.

Patient Guide

I created a patient support guide to be distributed during pre-surgery consultations. Feedback indicated that the guide was highly effective in helping patients prepare for surgery by providing a clear, easy-to-reference checklist they could use as needed.

Reflection

Visuals: The client granted creative freedom in shaping the visual aesthetic of the project. Together, we discussed incorporating Fire Me Up’s color scheme to maintain brand alignment, as well as weaving visual elements inspired by the physical studio into the design to support the overall story and learner experience.

Articulate Storyline 360: created animated pathways that relied heavily on timeline manipulation. This project emphasized the use of conditions, cue points, and variables to control movement, allowing animations to pause and resume seamlessly throughout the learning experience.

User Experience (UX): User experience has always been a central focus in designing effective learning tools. Once the module is fully deployed, I plan to gather feedback from learners to inform future improvements and enhance their overall experience.

User Experience (UX):  User experience is a core consideration in designing every learning tool. After the module is launched, I plan to collect learner feedback to identify opportunities for improvement and further enhance the overall experience.
